Playboy lets me down

The latest issue of Playboy has, as its interview, an article on country singer Toby Keith. Well…I guess that by interviewing a knuckle dragging, jingoistic, kill-'em-all-let-God-sort-'em-out PatriotTM, Playboy is trying to stay controversial. Apparently, naked women ceased being controversial some time ago -- no idea why it ever was, though -- so Playboy has decided that giving even more limelight to someone who should've fizzled out with all the other dim-bulb rednecks is the way to sell copies and keep subscriptions.

Anyway, my first reaction to seeing that Playboy had published an interview with Keith was to rip the pages out and ceremonially burn them. Then the sub title to the article caught my eye. Something about many people being surprised to learn that Keith is, in fact, a Democrat. Yes, I would indeed be surprised to learn this, especially given Keith's "American boot up the ass of anyone in the world who dares challenge us" attitude. So I started to read the interview. That's when I learned that Keith isn't a Democrat in the actual sense of the word, but that he's a Zell Miller Democrat. That is to say, basically more vile than most Republicans, which is no easy feat given the wretchedly über-patriotic, hyper-religious state of neo-conservatism these days. If I believed in the devil, I'd say he was incarnated as Zell Miller; and Toby Keith was his cheerleader. Obviously, a flaming liberal such as myself couldn't stomach any more of the article. Regardless of how badly I wish I was emotionless enough to objectively read the interview without wanting to put my head through the TV screen, I couldn't do it. Maybe I'll try later. Maybe I'll be pleasantly surprised to find out that my knee-jerk reaction to the first page or so of the article was wrong. But for now, it's probably best for my rage to simply skip the interview and look at the pretty pictures.

And speaking of skipping articles, I wish I had skipped the one on the Mexican sweat-shops. I was expecting a hard-hitting exposé on the squalid conditions and sub-human treatment of Mexican workers and for the evil corpwhoreations to be brought down by the author of the piece. Instead, I wasted a half-hour of my life reading about speculations and unsubstantiated hearsay; about a so-called investigative reporter who could do no better than conclude that, well, he couldn't really find anything wrong with the factories even though he was pretty sure they weren't good for the workers. Hey, thanks, genius! Next time you're too lazy to actually dig into the issue and find something, maybe you could just sum up, in about a paragraph's worth of text, the rumors about how bad the big businesses treat their Mexican workers? Had to waste my time stroking your own literary ego with an entire article, didn't you! Nothing like blathering on for thousands of words only to leave your reader no better informed than s/he was when s/he began the article. And what editor decided that this would make good copy?

I really ought to just stick to the pictures.

shit, lemme try that again. (i hate computers...)

does anyone actually by playboy for the articles? i thought that was an excuse thought up by 15 year old boys and middle aged men who believed that masturbation would make them go blind or destroy their wife's perception of them as perfect male specimens. i find it hard to believe that you're actually surprised that playboy had nothing new to add the argument against sweatshop labour. perhaps all the silicon has gone to your head...
the other thing i find particularly interesting about this posting is one blatant contradiction: you appear to have no trouble purchasing a copy of a grossly misogyntic glossy run by the of the king perverts himself, hugh hefner, but frequently comment (appropriately) on the misogyny of christianity and the right wing. maybe it's me but there seems to be something a little off about that; especially when there is a tonne of great independent pornography available which shows people of all body types and in no way supports a massive empire of exploitation...

Imagine my excitement to discover that someone (other than close friends, down whose throats I ram my screed, unsolicited) has actually read what I write. Not only that, but posted a response to it! (Something my writing has yet to motivate any of my friends to do thus far). I guess I can't lament that I'm merely screaming into the void anymore. What's more than someone posting a response, though, is that my very first commenter is Canadian! How cool is that!

Very well, then…enough with the excitement and ass-kissing.

I make no pretenses about buying Playboy solely for the articles; I enjoy the pictures as well. But -- to me, anyway -- it would be a waste to only look at the pictures and ignore the rest. If I merely wanted pictures, there are better options out there.

Regarding the misogyny of Playboy, I wonder how it is that a person could find fault with them while at the same time touting the "great independent pornography available which shows people of all body types...". The fact that the material came from Playboy rather than an independent source should have little to do with it's weighting as misogynistic. Losely speaking wouldn't allporn (except, maybe, porn "by women, for women") be misogynistic? And aren't we all, on some level, being exploited? What's important is that the trade be balanced. Sure Hugh (or his representatives) finds women to pose for his magazine so that he can make a bunch of money, but the women get something in return -- most notably a paycheck, but also intangibles like the benefit of exposure...no pun intended. Can it really be called exploitation if they're getting out of it something as valuable to them as what they're giving?

Somehow I don't think misogyny or exploitation are at issue, but either glossy magazines, or the size of Playboy's empire, or the fact that they place a disagreeable (to you) amount of emphasis on certain physical characteristics. My guess -- judging by your hesitancy in your blog to give too much praise to Green Day's latest offering merely because it was released by a major label and your praise for independent pornography in your comment -- is it's the commercial nature of it all that causes such consternation. Either that or you just really don't like women with fake boobs. And I certainly can't fault you there because I'll be the first to admit that fake breasts, at best, look...well...fake. And, at worst, garishly ridiculous.

ugh...you've read my blog. inexperience with the whole 'blogging' thing is making alice slightly superficial at present. somehow ranting about ashlee simpson and her ridiculous sister just aren't working for me at present. i don't think alice is a very fair representation of me...

...blah, blah...

yeah, i really like your blog actually, and have been reading it while bored out of my fucking skull at work. i just happened to bump into it one day while wasting time with my reluctant lover, the internet.

anyhow, thanks for commenting back, that's supercool. but you know i've got to respond-especially since you called me an indie snob... ;)

interestingly enough i had a conversation with a friend of mine regarding this issue and she made a similar comment: she said that she felt hypocritical commenting on the exploitation of women because she exploits men as well. i agreed with her but i think that the way in which men are exploited is somewhat different. men seem to be exploited for advertising purposes whereas the women seem to be exploited (in magazines like playboy) for the sexual gratification of men; and if financial compensation makes it ok then the women in playboy are prostitutes? …ok, that's taking it a bit far bit far. what i do wonder though, is if the compensation (fame, etc...) is enough; not all those women become rich or famous. i think someone like pamela anderson is the exception not the rule.

is playboy is more or less misogynistic then indie-porn? i'm not sure, but it seems to me that the ethos behind indie porn is more about empowerment and banishing stereotypes of sexual attractiveness; that people (men and women) don't have to be all plastic and without flaws to be beautiful. that being said, i refuse to pay for porn so my actual knowledge base is pretty limited. personally, a boy with a tonne of tattoos is going to turn my head a lot quicker than someone with washboard abs, but that’s just me…

i am not indie snob.

the size of hefner's empire is pretty gross but only because i don't really believe that ANYONE needs that kind of wealth especially when there are folks out there, like me even, who are doing what they love, not getting paid for it and suffering through shitty days at shitty jobs only to barely be able to pay their bills. so there's that, and i am not in favour of plastic surgery in the least. as someone who has struggled and continues to struggle with body image (yeah for being a girl!!) i have trouble buying any argument in favour of gratuitous surgery, especially breast implants. on a side note: i am glad you find them unattractive because they really are quite disgusting.

it's interesting that you brought up my lack of comments on the latest green day release. i'll explain. i have LOVED green day since 1990-ish and they were one of my first introductions to punk rock (my tastes in punk have expanded but...) and i did not offer comments for two reasons: 1) i have a monthly newsletter and i reviewed it there in great detail and 2) i didn't think anyone beside myself and maybe one or two other people who already know me would read my blog. the fact that the album was released on a major label is irrelevant. my tastes in music are generally independent but that's only because major labels rarely release the stuff that's really turning me on these days.

all that being said...i can't lie. the commercialization of EVERYTHING is a major issue for me and i try my best to support independent business and artists especially (because that’s my life)...whether that is part of the cause of my loathing of playboy i'm not sure. the next time i happen to catch an episode of e true hollywood story about the playboy mansion i will keep that in mind and let you know ;)

keep arguing with me, i love it.

xo alice.

p.s. the pacific north west is my favourite place in the states other than chicago!!

Can't really say I find a whole lot to argue with. Large corpwhoreations typically bad: yup. Superficial plastic surgery silly and unnecessary: mm-hmm. Indie rock rules all!...well, hey, too each their own, right? I don't have any exposure to indie punk but I imagine it wouldn't be for me even if I did have a clue about it. My S.O. likes the Violent Femmes. I pretty much like just the one song; and I'm sure anyone could guess which one it is. Likewise with your taste in music being largely independent as a result of major labels rarely releasing anything that does it for you, my tastes are largely commercial because a) I have no connection to the music underground and, b) I guess I just actually like (most of) the stuff I hear on the radio...Ashlee Simpson and her ilk excluded, of course. Then again, I tend to listen to stations with DJs who would rather impale themselves on a dull knife than play "pop" music, so maybe that will help to redeem me somewhat in the eyes of indie snobs everywhere. No, actually, it probably won't.

Ah yes, the age old discussion of exploitation. Women are exploited for the sexual gratification of men and men are exploited for the financial gratification of women. Or themselves. Or something. Cause it's not always that way. Which I'm happy to report is true for me and my S.O.; she not exploiting me for my money and me not exploiting her for merely her body. I exploit her for all kinds of things. =D
